On Friday, August 18, 2006, the FDA approved a viral cocktail to be sprayed on foods we eat. This is the first time viruses have been approved for use as food additives. The FDA wants you to believe it will be safe to consume these viruses every day for the rest of your life with no adverse health effects. Not surprisingly, the FDA doesn’t want you to know which foods are adulterated in this manner, for fear you may not buy them; thus, no labeling will be required.

Michael and I took off a day for our annual anniversary celebration to go pick huckleberries. We now have a 2-gallon stash to last us until next year. We were very discouraged to find that some people picking professionally were using metal rakes to harvest the berries. The process is doing quite a bit of damage to the bushes and breaking off all the berries that could have been harvested by others later. There were always plenty of berries for everyone before someone started doing this last year.

From Sandra: I wanted to let you know I thought that was one of the coolest appointments I’ve ever had and I would like to do it again. . .I realize I have stuffed my emotions so deep for so many years that I have a lot that needs cleared. . .I think the body work I do starts to bring it out but then I’m not sure how to process it so I have a tendency to stuff it back in. . .anyhoo, I really enjoyed talking to you and I think what you do is awesome!

The five-minute rule: Whether the owner leaves the house or leaves the room to go to the garden or bathroom, the dog sees it as its child leaving the protective custody of the pack. Jan’s interpretation is that the dog does not know how long you will be gone, so when you come back into the room, you must reestablish leadership by ignoring the dog for five minutes. Do not acknowledge barking, licking or throw the toy that it brings you. Even by turning around and saying “stop it,” an owner is allowing the dog to achieve its aim. So, no eye contact, no conversation and no touching initially unless it is to gently push the dog away.

Got Headaches? An article from Hepatology Dec., 2005 found that the percentage of potentially fatal acute liver failure cases caused by the ingestion of acetaminophen (Tylenol™) rose from 28% in 1998 to 51% in 2003. Drinking alcohol when taking this pain-killer—even if it’s only in the same day—increases the risk of permanent liver disease. Acetaminophen is an ingredient in many headache and cold remedies.

“Frito-Lay is being sued by a Massachusetts woman for allegedly deceptively marketing its “Light” potato chips. Those chips are made with olestra, a fat substitute that sometimes causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, dizziness, vomiting and other symptoms. She is asking the court to order Frito-Lay to require labels on Light chips warning consumers about the possible adverse reactions. (Denice’s note: Can you imagine the marketing campaign on that one? What a crack up.)
