Health In the News: Watermelon Benefits
“The United States Department of Agriculture Research Service has declared that watermelon packs a more powerful lycopene punch than tomatoes—40% more, that is! Watermelon also contains vitamins A, B-6, C, and thiamin. Dogs love it and many of our feline friends enjoy a cold, crisp piece of watermelon too.” (Denice’s note: I guess that explains why so many people test that it would be a Power Food for them as well!) (Taken from Top Ten Fruits & Veggies for your Best Friend, pages 37-42. Feb/Mar., 2006 issue of Animal Wellness Magazine. www.AnimalWellnessMagazine.com )
Frito-Lay Sued Over Light Chips
“Frito-Lay is being sued by a Massachusetts woman for allegedly deceptively marketing its “Light” potato chips. Those chips are made with olestra, a fat substitute that sometimes causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, dizziness, vomiting and other symptoms. She is asking the court to order Frito-Lay to require labels on Light chips warning consumers about the possible adverse reactions. (Denice’s note: Can you imagine the marketing campaign on that one? What a crack up.)
The article goes on to read: “The FDA has received more than 20,000 adverse reaction reports on Olestra. Olestra was developed by Procter & Gamble, although in 2002 P & G sold the factory that actually makes the substance. However, it continues to use olestra in Fat Free Pringles. Canada and England both prohibit its use.” (Found in Retired Public Employees’ Association of California Newsletter. Volume 7, Issue 1 Jan./Feb., 2006 edition.)
And finally. . . (I rant and rave about these things often asking my clients almost daily, “What are we doing to our world?”
Pesticides found throughout the nation’s streams
“WASHINGTON—Pesticides linked to cancer, birth defects and neurological disorders contaminate almost all of the nation’s rivers and streams and most fish found in them, but seldom at concentrations likely to affect people, government scientists said today.” (Excerpted from the Moscow-Pullman Daily News March 2, 2006 Issue.)
(Yeah. . .Right! I wonder why the challenge of infertility comes up so often these days? And thyroid disease? And immune suppression?)
Case of the Month: Infertility
Easy Steps to Conquering Infertility Anyone Can Do!
Did you know?
- One of every five couples experience fertility problems
- The average cost of one in-vitro fertilization cycle runs about $15,000
- The number of infertile women in the United States aged 20-25 tripled in the last 30 years
- Throughout the world, sperm counts have reduced by 50% in the last 50 years
- One woman in five experiences a miscarriage
- One couple in six cannot conceive naturally
- Women can produce antibodies against the male sperm?
- One birth in five is taken through cesarean section (this rate has quadrupled in the last 30 years)
- Diseases linked to the father’s genes include leukemia, asthma and mental development
Preconception healthcare involves making sure that there is an adequate supply of everything that is essential to the health of your egg and sperm and the baby’s development. This is accomplished by eliminating everything which has been shown to be harmful to that process. It’s as simple as that.
Your goals, prior to conception are to:
Use Condoms: The presence of immune-mediated antibodies in the female block the passage of the sperm. They are also responsible for miscarriages. So, when you are in the detox and pre-conception phases (the first 1-4 months,) it is important to use condoms as a barrier contraceptive to isolate the sperm. This way, the body won’t be exposed to them to cause an allergic reaction and the body can heal and regroup.
Minimize or Manage Stress: Where does stress reside in your body? It is different for everyone, but wherever it resides, it is affecting those body parts and the hormones they produce. For instance, if you hold stress in your gut, then the gut responds accordingly. Did you know that the gut produces more neurotransmitters than the brain? Stress affects fertility by increasing a hormone called cortisol.
Learn two natural methods that can greatly increase your chances of conception. These are the Mucous Method and the Temperature Method. The Mucous Method teaches you how to identify fertile and infertile mucous in the reproductive tract. Only Fertile mucous accepts, nourishes and transports sperm. The Temperature method focuses on daily recordings of the oral temperature taken the same time each day and identifies hormonal cycles and diseases that may affect fertility. Both are necessary for maximum conception success rates.
Minimize coffee consumption: We are a society of caffeine addicts. Coffee and caffeine are extremely toxic alkaloids. Coffee is a powerful contraceptive agent. Caffeine damages the DNA. Decaffeinated coffee is worse, as dry-cleaning chemicals are used to remove the caffeine from the beans.
Protect, educate and detoxify your body from all common toxins. Unexplained infertility largely results from environmental and dietary toxicity. Common causes of infertility include: heavy metal toxicity, chemicals from various sources, over-the-counter pain killers, “social” drugs such as alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, household chemicals, occupational exposure to chemicals, radiation damage, agricultural exposure to herbicides/ pesticides/ fungicides and fertilizers, hormones and estrogens in milk, dairy and meat products, sugar-induced hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, the use of raw soy products (soy milk and soy ice cream), petrochemical exposure, chlorine or fluorine exposure (showers, hot tubs, drinking water), certain sports (swimming, golf, cycling), plastics exposure (especially with heated plastic), microwave ovens, allergies, stress, emotions, gut flora imbalances, autoimmune diseases, hormone imbalances, food-borne organisms (Listeria and Toxoplasma), and more.
Normalize your weight if necessary. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is greatly influenced by excess weight. Obesity increases the risk of miscarriage, birth defects, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and premature birth. In men, obesity increases heat in the testicles which need to be two degrees cooler than the core body temperature for the sperm to survive. Also, increased estrogen (from the extra fat stores) decreases testosterone production.
Stop using lubricants and products that are toxic to sperm: Pre-seed is the best lubricant to use for intercourse when trying to conceive, as it is sperm-friendly. KY Jelly kills sperm.
Test negative for all genitourinary infections. Genitourinary infections have been shown to be responsible for infertility, miscarriage and fetal growth problems. These include: Streptococcus B, Enterococcus, Herpes Type I and II, Anaerobic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus millerii, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Garnerella, Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma and Candida. Chlamydia infections tend to scar the fallopian tubes and are one of the most common organisms leading to female infertility.
Commit to and accomplish an adequate exercise program. Exercise increases circulation and brings essential nutrients and blood to the ovaries, testes and uterus.
Increase your alkaline reserves by eating lots of fresh, raw fruits/ vegetables. I would recommend 2-3 cups of each daily for the first month for the detoxification period, then 75% of that amount after that.
Add Wheat Germ Oil, wheat germ, or Wheat Germ Pearles to the diets of both the prospective mother and father. Wheat germ has lots of zinc and selenium in it and works on the body to dilate both the fallopian tubes and the seminiferous tubules. This makes the transport of both egg and sperm easier. It also helps to increase sperm counts, motility, healthy morphology and the number of effective, fertile sperm. Three capsules, ½ teaspoon oil, or two tablespoons wheat germ is the usual dose.
Eat two tablespoons of raw, hulled Pumpkin Seeds each day. Pumpkin seeds bind up harmful byproducts of testosterone breakdown in the male and act as a building block for a balanced hormone system in the female. If a little is good, a LOT is NOT better, so stick to only two tablespoons max. Most other disease processes need only one tablespoon per day.
The goal to conquering infertility is to identify those factors that are causing infertility in both the male and the female. By doing so, we can work on individual issues and minimize environmental factors that influence infertility.
There are over 100 herbs, supplements, and homeopathics used in the support of infertility issues. These should be evaluated and protocols tailor-made for each couple. I hope this article gets you moving in a healthy direction so that you can accomplish your baby goals.
What’s New on the Website?
My Favorite Products has been updated a second time! Since many of you are not clients of mine yet and would like to try some of the products I talk about, I signed up as a Vitamin Shoppe affiliate several months back. Little did I know what a huge project THAT would be. After months of trying to get my account accepted by Click Bank, I spent several full-time days creating links.
Apparently I went over the 6-month grace period. I had just gotten the page complete, when it was brought to my attention that the pictures were not showing up. “What’s up with that?” I asked. Click Bank had inactivated my account due to inactivity. So I had to create a new account with a different email address and rebuild every single link! Yarg.
So, I hope you enjoy all of my hard work and PLEASE order something off the page if you order supplements online! I may just have to go order some product myself from someone else’s computer to get my account activated. I have two months left! Now at least I can get back to improving my website and adding more stuff!
Ask Dr. Moffat:
Question: Do I need to worry about chlorine in my water? Answer: Well…Yes! Of course! That means you also have to worry about the chlorine that gets into your system via hot tubs and swimming pools.
Certainly, we need to treat our water sources to protect ourselves and our families from water-born contaminants like viruses, bacteria, Giardia and other parasites. Chlorine is the most used chemical to do this job, but after it has done its job it should be filtered out in both our drinking water and in the water we shower with.
By showering in chlorinated water we are directly exposing ourselves through the skin and respiratory tract with a concentration of chorine equaling up to 50 glasses of chlorinated water a day! Just one more major chemical we are exposing ourselves to. Get a shower filter! I use the Nikken Shower Filter, but I’m sure there are other high-quality filters on the market as well.
Municipal Environmental Research Laboratory director, Francis T. Mayo says about chlorine:
“Scientific studies have linked chlorine and chlorination by-products to cancer of the bladder, liver, rectum, and colon, as well as heart disease, atherosclerosis, anemia, high blood pressure, and allergic reactions.”
OK, so why not just minimize the exposure and shower or bathe less frequently? Well, 30% of all the body’s toxins are excreted through the largest organ of our body–the skin. Not bathing everyday can be a critical key for those with chronic diseases and for those who want to prevent disease. To read more on the water issue, go to: /BasicsofHealth/water_basics1.htm
Question: My dog leaks. Is there anything natural I can give? Phenylproanolamine (Dexatrim) makes her really jumpy.
Answer: Yes, Black Cohosh or Nature’s Way Change-O-Life (you can order them off My Favorite Products) usually work great, although it takes a few weeks for visible results. It would be hard to be exact on the dosage without testing, but for smaller dogs it’s about ½ capsule per day and for giant breeds 2/day. Once the incontinence has stopped, you can try cutting back to half a dose. They most likely will need the product for the rest of their life.
Question: Are Far Infrared Saunas safe for people with breast and lip implants?
Answer: My Guides say that FIR is NOT safe for either enhancement. Scientifically, I would assume that when the plastic is heated it gives off toxic fumes which are harmful to the body (just like in Gulf War Syndrome victims.) “But, they aren’t silicone, they are saline implants.” It doesn’t matter. The saline is encased in plastic.
I have one client who had her implants removed after giving herself what she calls, “chemical AIDS.” She will be suffering with the side-effects of her vanity (her words) for many years to come. It is a horrible situation.
Product of the Month: Udo’s Choice and a couple products for wrist discomfort.
Udo’s Choice is a product that for many years has tested strong on a great number of clients. It must be just the right blend of Omega 3,6 and 9 oils that people and animals need, because I test about 30 different fat and oil sources during the examination process. What’s in Udo’s Choice Oil? A combination of organic flax seed oil, organic sunflower seed oil, organic sesame seed oil, rice and oat germ oils, organic coconut oil, organic evening primrose oil, lecithin (guaranteed GMO-free),Vitamin E, antioxidants (tocotrienols), and rosemary oil. To read more about this wonderful product, go here: https://www.udoerasmus.com/products/oil_blend_en.htm
What is a Crystaldyne and how does it work? Ah, the Crystaldyne “Zapper.” Evil Kneivel uses this thingy for pain—all over his body as you can imagine. Maybe they paid him to do the infomercial several years back, I don’t know. I use it to stimulate acupuncture points to get Chi flowing, especially when my allergies kick up and my liver seems like it is not processing like it should. Don’t know if they are available anymore. A Google search pulls up a bunch of articles on how come it is a hoax. Well, maybe it is, but it works for me. My mentor says to use it with equal amounts of clicks. Man…does it snap sometimes. I muscle test out which spots to zap on the body. I don’t think it’s that great a toy if you don’t know how to muscle-test. I ordered mine from this address: PO Box 5263 Scottsdale AZ 85261. I can’t locate a phone number to talk to this company. I paid about $65 in 1995 for mine.
A more effective product for wrist discomfort are magnets. To read about magnets, click here:
My favorite product for wrist discomfort is the elastomag wrist wrap. I have weak wrists and sometimes tweak them. When I wear a wrist wrap overnight, that discomfort is gone by morning quite often. Here’s a picture of what they look like: https://www.nikken.com/index.cfm?fuse=prod1&prod_id=1670
Honestly, it’s amazing they ever sell any products at all. They sure don’t make it easy to purchase anything! Guess they want their distributors to sell for them. I’m totally not into it. I know what works magnet product-wise, but I don’t believe in all the products. I just like to offer what works.
If you want one of these, the item # is 1684 Wrist Wrap Elastomag (one size fits all.) It sells for $66 plus shipping. You can call Nikken at 1-800-669-8859 extension 4 and order under us. Our number is 814-32-3900.
Or you can order the magnetic bracelet (which will take longer for effect, but looks prettier to wear during the day) Item # 1900 Cross-Link platinum $150.00 or Gold, # 1904. Here’s what they look like. I’ve worn mine for 4 years now. The clasp finally broke. Guess I’ll have to order another one. https://www.nikken.com/index.cfm?fuse=prod1&prod_id=1904
Recipe of the Month:
Spicy No Fat Cranberry-Raisin Bran Muffins
In a mixing bowl, combine:
- ½ cup Brown Sugar (Use C and H as cane sugar does not contain the sulfites beet sugar produces.)
- ½ cup Blackstrap Molasses (Contains lots of trace minerals.)
- ½ teaspoon Celtic Sea Salt (Contains bioavailable trace minerals.)
- 2 tablespoons Watkin’s aluminum-free Baking Powder
- 1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon (Good for circulation and your heart.)
- ½ teaspoon ground Cloves (A natural wormer.)
- 2 teaspoon dried ground Ginger (Great for circulation.)
- ½ teaspoon ground Cardamom (Great for digestion.)
- 2 teaspoons Pumpkin Pie Spice
- 2 cups Almond milk, Rice Milk, Oat Milk or 1% Milk (Note: Soy milk contains Goitrogens which bind thyroid hormone making it inactive. If you like soy, use fermented soy products or try soy nuts. Heating inactivates the goitrogen.)
- 2 Eggs (Great brain and nerve food.)
- ¾ cup Lighter Bake butter and oil replacement (Great for bowels.)
- 1 teaspoon pure Vanilla Extract (Used for the brain. Do NOT use imitation—it’s bad for you.)
After the above mixture is beaten until smooth, add in:
- ½ cup Wheat Germ (Huge amounts of Zinc, Selenium and great for reproductive organs.)
- 1 cup Unprocessed Bran (FIBER! We all need more of it.)
- 2 cups Whole Wheat flour (Whole grains take longer to process so are better for our blood sugar levels.)
Then add, last:
- 1 cup Raisins
- 1 cup dried Cranberries (Great for the urinary tract and those sphincter muscles. Makes the inside of the bladder slicker so that bacteria can’t stick to it.)
Spray a dot of butter-flavored pan spray at the bottom of 24 regular-sized muffin cups. Divide the mixture up equally into the muffin cups (approx. 1/3 cup mix/cup.) Bake in preheated oven at 400°F for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out dry. Makes 24 muffins.
Cool, remove from muffin tins and serve, refrigerate or freeze.
Media Reviews:
I’ve done a little updating of my video media review section of the website after watching two great movies this last month—The Girl in the Café and Just Like Heaven. I’d highly recommend both movies.
Tips and Tricks for a Healthier Life:
Culling Negative Energy Items: Get rid of items in your house that have negative energetic patterns in them. For years I had as one of my decorations a rattle that was given to me for taking care of a client’s dog. I had no idea what I was getting into at the time or why I volunteered to care for the dog. The dog needed a special diet, bathes every other day, lots of exercise, and I had no place to keep it so had to drive to my place of business twice each evening to take it out an exercise it. He barked constantly most of the day disrupting my peace of mind and the businesses in the building with me. I had asked, as payment, for a percussion instrument to be brought back for me from Africa, where the clients went for their church. I envisioned a large, hand-made drum. What I got was a rattle. The owner bragged how she had only paid a nickel for it. Every time I saw that rattle I “rattled” off that story. And I had that rattle several years! One day it dawned on me that I had effectively cleaned my environment of everything having to do with any negative emotion, so when a client picked the rattle up, I started to relay the broken record story once again, then stopped myself. “Take the rattle. I’m sure you will enjoy it much more than I have.” I said. What a relief.
The point of the story is that it’s good to occasionally go through your house and your belongings and gift those things that no long fit your emotional goals to someone who will enjoy them. It doesn’t matter how you do it. You can have a yard sale, a give-away sale, set them on the curb or give them to the Goodwill store, but get rid of these items that are holding you as an emotional hostage. You’ll be glad you did.
How to pick a ripe banana. Here is a handy description on the ripening stages of bananas.
- Green banana…Not ready to eat raw, but you can cook it. Basically, the banana is raw starch somewhat like a raw potato.
- Partially Yellow Banana-The banana is yellow, but still has some green on it…This banana should also be eaten cooked, and not raw. The starches have not yet fully converted into sugar yet. You can cook as a dessert, or as a vegetable.
- Yellow Banana– No more green-all yellow banana-The banana is now ready to be eaten raw. Most all of the starch has been converted into sugar and the tasty banana can now be easily digested.
- Yellow banana with brown speckles– The banana is now at its peak for flavor and nutrition. It can be eaten by anyone, even those who have weak digestions.
- Brown, with some yellow—Use these for banana bread.
(Taken from the 1926 book, “Yes, 100 Ways to Enjoy Bananas.”)
Did you know that bananas are considered to be the greatest body builders among the fruit foods? I didn’t. I do know that if you have stomach problems that bananas are the most difficult fruit to digest. Other fruit only takes 10 minutes to digest (that’s why you should eat fruit by itself.) Bananas take about 40 minutes. I’ve also heard that they have more acid than most fruits. I’d never thought of it that way because they taste sweet to me. For optimal storage, do not keep bananas in the refrigerator. For other tips on how to pick the best fruit, see my Ezine article, How to Pick a Great Piece of Fruit: https://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Pick-a-Great-Piece-of-Fruit&id=100602
Client Testimonials
From Iris E.–Chitosan lowered my Cholesterol by 21 points in one month! That is unbelievable! I am really excited about my results, especially since I had to go buy a belt!
From Darlene C.—“Here. I want to show you something.” She said as she plopped down a blood pressure chart. (I gulped, but after all these years I knew that if my client was patient with me, we could work any problems out together. Donna had been keeping track of her blood pressure for months now. She was seeing me for her 1-month recheck appointment.) “Look at my blood pressure in May, 2005—161/104.” Yikes. “But in just one month, doing what you suggested, look at it now—117/79!” Whew. “That’s incredible.” I said. Now, let’s work on that cholesterol.
It has been a great month.
What’s New at Our House:
Celestine Prophecy updates: Well, it has taken me a month, but I finally wrangled three places to show the Celestine Prophecy. You can get the current information on my webpage, www.NaturalHealthTechniques.com in the far right column. If you are local, please come out and support three good causes. It’s part of my annual tithing program. I have found that I’m perfectly fine donating time, talent and love—it’s the dollars part of the tithing process that is out of balance for me. This project will put a balance back into my program.
Our county’s first Feral Cat Clinic for 2006 will be April 15th. We spay and neuter about 75 cats that day. It’s always fun and there is always room for volunteers. It’s held at the Latah Country Fairgrounds. I’ll be there. Hope to see some of you as well.
Our Vaccination clinic last month at Pets are People, Too brought in a profit of $3800 for the Moscow High School Wrestling Team. It was a blast for all and a great experience for the wresting team. I’d rather do that than a car wash any day! Thanks to all who updated their pet’s shots and opted for the worming and microchipping.
And I’ll be gone March 8th to the 12th. Our shelter surgeons are headed off to California for some continuing education. We are honing up on shelter medicine topics such as how to handle upper respiratory disease, ringworm, and hording. Oh, and I’ll probably sit in on the Spay and Neuter Surgical Techniques lecture. You never know, maybe I can learn some ways to make my 6-minute cat spay faster. . .or not. . .
Local Events:
IAM Holistic Fair: Michael and I will have a booth at a local holistic fair on Sat./Sun. March 25th and 26thfrom 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Michael will be doing face readings, and I’m going to give a talk on the many, many ways I use muscle testing (that will be on Saturday.) It’s a free event.
Celestine Prophecy Sneak Preview March 31st 7p.m. at the 1912 Building on 3rd street in Moscow. Friday, April 7th in Lewiston at the Unity Church.
