*Intro. to Parasitology

The connection between parasites and health problems is very strong. This concept is very accepted in third world countries but ignored in developed countries. Why? And with as many outdated water-treatment systems, international travel, imported food and use of massive amounts of antibiotics, our bodies are very susceptible to parasites. I read one resource that stated that as many as 73% of people struggle with symptoms caused by parasites that lead to weight gain. As a veterinarian, I’ve found that parasites are very common and I recommend routine worming once or twice a year to keep my animal patients (and myself) healthy.

Acid Water

Acid water: While many, if not most drinking water sources in the US are slightly alkaline, many, many others are slightly-to-very acidic. Water from shallow wells, springs, rivers, creeks, lakes are very likely to be acidic. It’s best to check your water and know approximately what the pH of it is. The pH of water can change from season to season and your body can handle acid water to some extent but drinking acid liquids over time can wreak havoc on your body.

Antacids and their Side Effects

Antacids-11 Potential problems associated with frequent or long term use of antacids in general include: 1.Poor digestion leading to allergies, bloating and gas. 2.Diarrhea, loose/watery stools and abdominal bloating form when large partially digested food particles ferment and draw extra fluid into the large intestine creating gas and watery stools. 3.Decreased absorption of a variety of nutrients such as folic acid, vitamin C, beta carotene, iron, calcium magnesium and zinc. 4.Increased risk of food allergies. 5.Reduced effectivenessof the antacids with long term use because the stomach can eventually compensate for extended use of antacids.
6.Increased risk of gastro-intestinal infections. 7.Bloating: Antacids containing sodium bicarbonate and calcium bicarbonate release carbon dioxide as they neutralize stomach acid. This may cause bloating in the stomach as well as cause an increased production of . . .

Are You Taking Toxic Doses of Vitamin D

Are you taking toxic doses of Vitamin D? I see the gambit of Vitamin D recommendations. Some doctors recommend mega daily doses with no end point and others recommend a once or twice weekly dose for 2-3 months. Most often, the people who consult with me who are on vitamin D supplements test they don’t need them. The same goes for fish oil supplements. Some of these vitamin D supplements are made from lanolin or the skin of cattle and some are not sulfated. A sulfur molecule acts with the vitamin D by connecting with an LDL cholesterol molecule for transport through the body. The more synthetic the supplement, the fewer peoples bodies like them.

Bladder Pain Syndrome and Interstitial Cystitis and

If you know of someone with this condition, you can be sure that their lives are totally centered around where all the toilets are—even when taking short trips. Interstitial cystitis is defined as recurring pain or discomfort in the bladder and surrounding pelvic (perianal) regions in both men but mostly women over the age of 30. This condition is a sign of a toxic body and is often associated with other inflammatory conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. Interstitial Cystitis causes scarring and stiffness of the bladder which affects the nerves in that area that signal the need to urinate. Some people with this condition have been known to need to use the bathroom up to 60 times within a 24 hour period—as you can imagine this interferes greatly with any social, work and sexual intimacy situations.

Apparently the entomologists have been seeing the most cases of this Morgellon’s syndrome. They’ve spend a lot of time as a group trying to help people with this disease and even speak about it at their conventions. The conclusion (much to the relief of the entomologist I talked to for about an hour) was that they should send these people back to their doctors, that they can’t do anything about it and are wasting their time, that some people actually DO have parasites on their bodies (this entomologist found a cockroach egg in the samples I brought to him which I almost had to force on him to take a look at under his microscope). Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or MCS

It’s most annoying to people who suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity for people spraying herbicides and pesticides who ignore ‘No Spray’ signs posted outside of the client’s property. These sensitive people end up having to stay inside their house because they are in agony and can’t get out of bed for a few days. The lucky ones get out of town for a few days to a pre-established “safe house” usually of a friend or an understanding family member. The offenders are not knocking on the MCS person’s door to check out the results of their ‘experiment’. They just assume they can spray whenever they want and not take responsibility for their actions. As one of my patients aptly put it. . .“If only the person spraying could spend just ONE day in my body and feel what I’m feeling after they spray. Maybe they would understand.”

Parasite-Chiggers

I often see chiggers as an external parasite that is really, really itchy. The term chigger is a common name for the six-legged larva of any of several blood-sucking mites. Chiggers normally feed on the blood of animal hosts such as birds, reptiles, and small mammals, but they also bite humans. People who go hiking, camping, or simply playing in the backyard or park can pick up a case of chiggers. Chiggers cause tiny red itchy bumps on the skin. These bites can be differentiated from flea bites because flea bites usually make a tight grouping of 3-5 bites.

In 1996, a large outbreak of Cyclospora infection in the United States and Canada was caused by Guatemala-imported raspberries. It is not clear how the fruit became contaminated, but it might have happened when fruit touched the ground or when contaminated water was sprayed over fruit fields by sprinkling systems. People infected with C. cayetanensis excrete oocysts that are not infectious. This is an important clue in diagnosis because other parasitic diseases can be very infectious so more than one person (or pet) in the family will have symptoms at the same time. Cyclospora needs days or weeks after being passed in a bowel movement to become infectious. People most likely get Cyclospora infection by ingesting food or water that was contaminated with stool from an infected person. Rabbits, muskrats and other small critter then eat the grasses contaminated with the eggs that came from the raccoon and the cycle continues. The challenge is when a water source gets contaminated with raccoon feces or when a human has a pet raccoon with the parasite. A human comes along and eats the undercooked or raw meat and the immature parasite matures in the intestinal tract of the human.

Tapeworm-Taenia solium (Pork)

Taenia solium, the pork tapeworm, is from one to several meters in length and is able to produce two diseases in the human, the taeniosis and cysticercosis. The taeniosis (intestinal form) is an exclusive disease of humans, often asymptomatic, and can perhaps maintain the infection for years. The main clinical manifestation is the frequent spontaneous elimination of proglottids in the feces. Approximately 5% to 40% of people with taeniosis develop into cysticercosis, confirming the fecal-oral contamination and infections of people associated with them.

Thyroid Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

Thyroid hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are serious diseases affecting much of the population. Iodine deficiency is the second major cause of hypothyroidism. The first cause of iodine deficiency is diet. So why not eat fortified table salt? Well, these kinds of salts are highly processed. All the natural minerals are extracted leaving only Sodium, Chloride and Iodine in inorganic form, which is not bioavailable. The body will use it if there is nothing else. The thyroid gland will store this iodine until it needs it, but it doesn’t use inorganic forms as efficiently and effectively as organic forms. To get around this problem, use Celtic Sea Salt, which comes from the ocean, is not refined, is gray, moist and is surrounded by organic “Mother Liquor”.

To Vaccinate or Not

How would you feel if you decided not to vaccinate your child and he/she came down with polio? I have several clients with Post Polio Syndrome, and let me tell you, their life is constant and unending pain. Granted, you may have a bank account large enough to overcome a case of Parvo in your puppy (if it survives,) but is it worth it for the puppy to have to go through that? Or Feline Leukemia in your cat? Vaccines are cheap and effective insurance for these deadly and debilitating diseases. Now let me give you some other options.

Tongue Diagnosis and Analysis

Tongue diagnosis: A normal tongue is pink in color, medium thickness, no cracks, ulcers, no teeth marks and with a light white moist coat (with root) on it. It has a look of aliveness and is supple (not stiff). There is no movement (quivering, trembling, side-to-side motion, curling or shifting to one side.) A healthy tongue looks like a piece of freshly killed meat.

Urinalysis Interpretation

The urinalysis measures the presence and amount of a number of chemicals in the urine, which reflect much about the health of the kidneys, along with cells that may be present in the urine. We try to identify crystals, bacteria, yeast, red cells, white cells (indicating infection), something called a cast (which is a clump of sloughed cells from inside the tiny renal filtration tubules), sperm and even the occasional parasite. This lets us know if we are dealing with infection, diet or metabolism disorders, and what part of the urinary system is in trouble.

Vaccines and Vaccination Nosodes

“Well,” I hear you commenting already, “what about all those side effects, governmental conspiracies to give whole populations AIDS, vaccine induced Autism and mercury toxicity I read about caused specifically by the vaccines?” Many studies on the other side of pro-vaccinating show conclusively that more people die when they are NOT given the vaccines than are affected adversely when given vaccines. “But, what it if were YOUR child that ended up with Autism?” You counter.

Water Basics

Private Wells and private water systems may have high levels of contaminants. Private water systems may have improperly sealed (or unsealed) well heads and/or unsealed or open holding tanks. The risks here are the presence of algae, decaying plant matter, insects, animal waste products and bacteria. If you live in farming country, live near a feedlot, or near a poorly designed septic system, Nitrates can be a serious problem, as well. High nitrate levels and that of some other contaminants can be seasonal. You may need to test for nitrates more than once during the year.

Water Filters

Water Filters. Do you need one? In America we use more than 75,000 toxic chemicals every day and new ones are being developed every year. We are learning the hard way that many of the chemicals we use ultimately appear in the water we drink. Through the natural processes of the hydrologic cycle Mother Earth recycles the same water over and over. She does not create “new” water. As we use more chemicals, the levels of those chemicals in our water supply increases proportionately.

What Causes Disease?

The body’s natural state is health, so what causes disease? Disease happens on a cellular level. All disease is ultimately a breakdown in function of the body’s cells. When this happens, it creates “fertile soil” for the dis-ease process.  This breakdown is accomplished by less than perfect eating habits, stress, stuffing emotions, eating too many cooked foods and too much sugar, salt, caffeine, drugs, vaccines, tension, depression, lack of proper sleep, lack of exercise, environmental contamination of the air/water/food and the retention of metabolic wastes (constipation, lack of sweating, blocked lymphatic channels). The only effective way to “cure” disease is to eliminate the causes.

What is a Normal Bowel Movement?

Normal bowel movements should be brown to light brown, formed but not hard or too soft, cylindrical but not flattened on any side, fairly bulky and full bodied but not compact, easy to pass, and it shouldn’t have an extremely foul smell. Bowel movements should be in one piece, about the size and shape of a banana being tapered at the end. Sometimes this will not be discernable if the feces breaks up in the toilet. Some people feel that if the body is absorbing all the minerals from the food that the stool will float. Others believe that the stool should sink. I think the important thing is that there are no air bubbles in the stool and that it doesn’t drop like a brick in the toilet. It should be somewhere in between.

What is a Rule Out

Say you go to a doctor because your ankle hurts. You took a pretty bad fall and twisted it. We’d make some basic assumptions from the clue of trauma and twisting motion to rule in sprain, strain, fracture (compound, compressed, or spiral), and periosteal bruising. These would be high on the rule out list. But let’s say we asked some more questions and found out that you were 80 years old, arthritic, haven’t taken care of yourself and cancer runs in your family.

Which Alternative Healing Techniques are Best For Me?

After many years of exploration, I have learned that there is something good to learn from everybody. Don’t “throw the baby out with the bath water” if you don’t vibrate positively with a certain healer. Glean what works for you and move on. Don’t be afraid to explore new healing modalities. Shifting and returning to practitioners you have not seen for several years also helps. As you grow, so does your lens of perspective and understanding. What one practitioner says to you today may mean something totally different to you years from now. What you don’t understand, put on the “Cosmic Bookshelf.”

Yin-Yang

Ahh the yin-yang concept. It can be confusing. All things we come in contact with either have Yin qualities, Yang qualities, or are a mixture of both. Nothing is either totally Yin or totally Yang. Everything lies on a continuum of either more yin or more yang and the qualities are only in relation to one another.
